Gnosticism and the Body

In a thoughtful post, John Helmiere discusses the devaluation of the body in gnostic theology. Although he makes some fair points about gnosticism, I think the attitude about the deficiencies of the physical human (especially women) is not unique to gnostic Christian thought. (See, for instance, my wife's book Holy Misogyny.) Gnostic spirituality (in the modern world) need not be so anti-physical world as some of the ancient gnostics (but not all!) may have been.
